Running for Council

What is Council?

Council is the governing body of the SALPN.  As a self regulating profession, LPNs are voluntarily elected to Council.  The seven LPN positions on the SALPN Council consist of the President, President Elect and five (5) Member at Large positions each representing a regional zone.  In addition, there are three public representatives appointed by the Minister of Health and the Executive Director.

What will be expected of you as a Member-At-Large member?

Position Description:

The Member at Large is a member of the governing Council of the SALPN.  Each Member-At-Large is elected to a two year term and represents one of five electoral zones. (Below is information on the Electoral Zones) A Member at Large can run for two consecutive terms of two years each. 

Commitments:

  • attending Council meetings (2 day meetings 5 times per year);
  • sitting on SALPN Committees (2 to 6 meetings per year);
  • attending the SALPN AGM);
  • may be involved in external activities;
  • preparing for meetings and activities (2 to 10 hours per month).

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Making decisions in the best interests of the public;
  • Developing a good understanding of the profession and all the SALPN's documents;
  • Being a strong voice at the Council table;
  • Representing and complying with Council decisions;
  • Conducting oneself in a professional manner;
  • Being a positive ambassador for the SALPN;
  • Representing the highest standards of the profession.

 

What will be expected of you as a President Elect?

Position description:

The President Elect represents the President in the President's absence.  The President Elect has a two year term and is the only nominee for President at the end of his/her term.

Commitments:

  • apprenticing to the President;
  • representing the SALPN in the absence of the President;
  • attending Council meetings (2 day meetings 5 times per year);
  • sitting on SALPN Committees (2 to 6 times per year);
  • attending SALPN AGM;
  • involvement in external activities (SAHO convention, workshops, committees, etc.);
  • preparing for meetings and activities (2 to 10 hours per month).

What will be expected of you as a President?

Position description:

The President is the chief elected officer on the SALPN Council and represents the Council at official functions.  The President chairs Council meetings, the Finance Committee and is an ex officio, non voting, member on all other SALPN committees.  The President's term is two years.

Commitments:

  • chairing Council meetings (2 day meetings 5 times per year);
  • chairing Finance Committee meetings (1/2 day meetings in conjunction with Council meetings);
  • representing the SALPN at official functions;
  • chairing the SALPN AGM;
  • participating in external activities (SAHO convention, workshops, committees, etc.);
  • preparing for meetings and activities (5 to 15 hours per month).

Electoral Zones & Map

People vote and represent zones based on their principle place of employment, not place of residence.  There are five zones which consist of:

Zone 1 - West

All health agencies within the Heartland, Cypress and Five Hills Health Authorities

Zones 2 - North

All health agencies within the Athabasca, Keewatin Yatthe, Mamawetan Churchill River, Prairie North, Prince Albert Parkland and Kelsey Trail Health Authorities

Zone 3 - Saskatoon

All health agencies within the Saskatoon city limits

Zone 4 - Regina

All health agencies within the Regina city limits

Zone 5 -East

All health agencies within the Saskatoon, Sunrise, Regina Qu'Appelle and Sun Country Health Authorities except Regina and Saskatoon cities
