LPN Competency Profile

The Competency Profile for Licensed Practical Nurses of Saskatchewan is a valuable resource which provides comprehensive information about competencies within the LPN scope of practice.

LPN Competencies are more than just skills and tasks.  Competency includes theoretical knowledge, clinical judgement, critical thinking and technical ability.

While no one LPN possesses all competencies described in the Profile, each LPN is responsible for ensuring that he/she has any LPN competency required in his/her practice.

Intended uses for this Profile include:

  • outlining LPN competencies in Saskatchewan
  • providing a reference for each LPN's self-assessment
  • providing direction to SIAST regarding essential curriculum components
  • being a guideline for developing competency assessment tools and LPN job descriptions
  • providing baseline information for health human resource planning
  • serving as a reference for employers and other stakeholders
