SALPN Scholarships to the

Saskatchewan Institute of Health Leadership (SIHL)

 The Saskatchewan Institute of Health Leadership (SIHL) is coordinated by the Centre for Continuing Education, University of Regina.  The aim of SIHL is to bring together healthcare professionals from all disciplines and all levels to foster leadership potential, skills and the creation of a leadership community that works together to promote, support and sustain good health. 

It is the first of its kind in Canada.  Registration is limited to 40 students per course.  Successful participants receive a Certificate that attests to mastery of the core competencies.  

The SALPN has been involved in SIHL from its inception.  Since 2007, the Council has been awarding up to two SIHL Scholarships available to practicing LPNs.  The guidelines for awarding the scholarships are:

  • Submission of a application which can be found below. The Hand in Hand Edition 1 annualy advises of the due date for applications.
  • A commitment to return for service which may include:
  • running for the SALPN Council
  • sitting on SALPN Committees
  • presenting at a SALPN event
  • volunteering to Coach at future SIHL programs
  • any other mutually agreed to professional activities

The scholarship includes the full tuition fee and all reasonable travel and accommodation expenses.  Wage replacement is not covered.

Six of our graduates (Cynthia Gutek, Kim Kehrig, Sandy Tokaruk, Kathy Ogle, Irene de Laforest and Chris Bailey) have gone on to become SIHL coaches.

The SIHL program begins with a four day Spring Retreat which includes lectures and workshops focusing on 6 core competency areas:

  1. Life balance and personal development
  2. Visioning & Planning
  3. Systems Thinking
  4. Conflict and Collaboration
  5. Policy and Politics
  6. Community and Culture

Also at the Spring Retreat participants self select themselves into working groups, who will, over the next six months complete a group project,

Between scheduled Retreats, participants' learning continues via:

  • four teleconference presentations
  • interaction with fellow participants
  • ongoing access to the SIHL Facilitators and Coaches
  • Completing their group projects they developed at the Spring Retreat

At the two-day follow up Fall Retreat, participants will present the results of their group projects.
