Thank you for your interest in licensure with the Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses (SALPN). Applicants applying for registration with the SALPN who have received their training outside of Canada must comply with the following to determine their eligibility for registration: Education: Graduation from a practical nursing program that included theoretical and clinical experience in medicine, surgery, maternal/newborn, paediatrics, mental health, gerontology and community. Registration/Licensure: You must be registered in good standing in the jurisdiction where you most recently worked as a nurse. Language Proficiency: English is the main language used in health care in Saskatchewan. We require that you are proficient in both written and spoken English to ensure safe nursing practice. Hours of Practice: In the last five years, you must have either:
Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE): Once we have approved your application, you can apply to write the CPNRE. Application Procedure: 1. Complete the Application for Registration form and return it to our association along with an application fee of $75.00. This application fee is non-refundable. 2. Complete Part A of the Verification of Registration/Licensure form and send it to the licensing body that you were or are currently licensed with. After completion have them return it directly to our office. If you have been licensed in another jurisdiction in the previous 5 years please forward a Verification form to those organizations as well. 3. Send Request for Nursing Program Verification form along with the Request for Transcripts form to your school of nursing. They will complete the Nursing Program Verification form and return it directly to our office along with your transcripts. 4. Forward documentation as listed on "International Qualifications Assessment Service Application" to the International Qualifications Assessment Services (IQAS), (http://www.learning.gov.ab.ca/iqas). A basic assessment is required. Have IQAS send the results of the assessment directly to our office. Applicants who received their education in the U.S.A. do not have to be assessed by IQAS. 5. All applicants whose first language is not English are required to successfully complete a written and spoken test of English. See 'Acceptable English Language Tests'. Results are valid for two years. 6. Please complete and return the Authorization To Share Records form with your application. 7. Send the Employer Verification Form to all employers you have worked for in the last five years. Have them complete the form and submit the requested information directly to our office. 8. Please complete and return the Competency Checklist form with your application. 9. Send a certified copy of your birth certificate. If surname is different than birth certificate, please submit a certified copy of documents for legal change of name. (e.g. marriage certificate). 10. Submit an original criminal record check and an original vulnerable sector check. 11. Once all paper based requirements have been met successfully, applicants will be referred by the SALPN registrar, to the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) for the course; Roles, Responsibilities and Ethics of the Licensed Practical Nurses (EMPL 1000). 12. Once eligibility for registration in Saskatchewan has been determined and the SIAST course (EMPL 1000) completed, you will be required to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE). These examinations are held three times a year in January, May and September. The application fee to write the CPNRE is currently $387.00. The practicing fee for 2011 is $400.00.
